There are many jitney buses traveling around Nassau and into the suburban areas of Nassau.  The #10 is the most popular, and will take you from downtown Nassau to Cable Beach.   The jitney will take you along the Western Esplanade, passing Fort Charlotte, Ardastra Gardens entry road, Arawak Cay's Fish Fry as well as the Cable Beach Resorts area passing hotels such as Wyndham, Sheraton and Sandals.  You can ask the driver to stop anywhere along the way.  Pay as you leave the jitney, exact change only, $1.25 for adults and $.75 cents for children. Some drivers will provide change, you can always ask before jumping in. To return to downtown, just flag down the jitney from in front of your hotel or restaurant. When they see people along the road, Jitneys will honk to offer a ride.  They run every few minutes from 6am - 6:30pm or until sunset.   Jitneys routes do not go over the Paradise Island bridge, for this you need to take a cab or ferry boat or if you're feeling up for a challenging walk, you can hike up and over the bridge.  Number 1 and 9 can drop you at the foot of the bridge on the Nassau side, and if you are a group it is posible to ask the Jitney driver to take you to the island, for around double fee (3$/person). Keep in mind there is a 2$ toll on the entering bridge that the driver will have to pay.

Jitneys

If you are looking for cheaper travel, then you can always go for one of the Jitney which is £1.25 each time you ride. The most popular Jitney is the number 10 which goes up and down from Cable Beach to Nassau.

To get a Jitney, find one of the many stops along the road and flag one down. They do stop running quite early in the evening, so you won't get one back fromt he casino late at night.

Jitneys can be great fun to mix with locals and friendly tourists too - we met some great people riding on them

Remember to have exact change, as the driver does not give change. If you pay $1.50, then essentially you are giving a 50 cent tip.

The #10 jitney goes from the downtown area of Nassau west towards Cable Beach.

It is a long walk from the bridge to get the #10. You would need to get the ferry across to Nassau and walk down Bay Street to get the bus - just across from the straw market.

There are many bus routes, so make sure you get the #10. It is $1 per person, each way.

Each ride costs $1.25 to $3.50 per person on New Providence Island

The #10 bus runs east and west from Nassau to Compass Point, around 30 minutes west of Nassau. That route will satisfy most tourist needs. The buses don’t go to Paradise Island though. You’d need to take the water taxi or regular cab. None of the jitneys go to Queens Staircase. That’s about a 10 minute walk from the cruise ship docks.

Mini buses (jitneys) run round the island, connecting Nassau to everywhere else.

Jitneys are small minibuses that can carry about 20 or so people and cost a set price of $1 for any single journey. They are very useful if you’re staying on Cable Beach for getting in/out of downtown Nassau (No’s 10 & 10A). They terminate on the corner of Frederick St and Bay St near the Straw Market. My only gripe with them is that they stop at 7 or 8pm which means you have to take a taxi back if spending the night in Nassau.

You should pay the fare when you get off, but you are required to pay exact fare ($1.50) in change.

Jitneys service is quite extensive all across Nassau and there are many routes that reach out to various places. Most start from the downtown area like the George Street (off Bay street), East Hill Street etc. 

The famous #10 Jitney to Cable Beach loads passengers on George & Bay Streets (in front of McDonalds, across from the British Colonial Hilton). Other jitneys are located on Charlotte & Bay Streets.

At Paradise Island Dock you can see gift and souvenir items being sold. You can find Queen Conch shells, stone jewelry, wood carved statues etc on sale. Pick up a glass of local island drink 'Bahama Mama' which is a blend of rum, fruit juices like pineapple, orange etc and crushed ice... tastes great. 

Airport to downtown Nassau by bus

Here is the truth local taxi drivers would rather keep it a secret. There is a jitney bus 12 (or/and 12b) that runs between airport and downtown for $2.5 per person (some will ask extra $2-3 for luggage). The drvers generally are honest and do not try to rip you off but always check price before boarding since you pay when exiting bus which is too late to ask. I tested the bus when going from Nassau downtown TO THE AIRPORT so here it is: board either at George St (down the street from Towne Hotel - you will see few buses parked there) or optionally wait at McDonalds but there you will be harassed by cab drivers offering you a ride for $27. Bus runs every... hmm... I was told every 30 min but then I saw two of them passed me with "off service" sign since it was Sunday lunch time and they already took rest of the day off so I ended up waiting for 60 minutes  - again it was Sunday. Ride time depends on frequency of stops but I would average it at 30 minutes. I got off the bus a little past shell gas station right next to the airport (there is only one shell next to international terminal so use google maps to find it - it is at the intersection and is marked as JFK) and then took free airport shuttle to terminal. Shuttle took not even 5 minutes so probably you can skip that and walk. Now, if I were to take the bus from the airport TO DOWNTOWN I would check on the map how to get from arrivals to the shell station and wait there (I would wait close by the road as there is not explicit bus stop and you will have to wave it down but you will see it - Toyota Coaster minibus and you will see the number on it). Note that bus may or may not go directly to downtown - I have not tested that part. Also I would not count on the bus if arriving late. The worst that can happen is that you will get impatient waiting for the bus and get a $27 taxi from shell gas station.

If heading to Atlantis you can use 12b bus, ask driver to drop you off close to the ferry terminal, then take a ferry for $3 to Paradise Island, then walk from ferry terminal for 5-10 min depending on where you are staying (it is around 5 min to Coral Tower).

Generally, the whole trip is pretty safe - I was traveling with my wife and she was also fine. However that is my/our personal opinion.

Taxis, often minivans and always identifiable by their yellow license plates and little Gothic blackletter "Taxi" lettering, roam the streets of Nassau. They're equipped with meters but will usually refuse to use them, so agree on the fare in advance. Expect to pay $15-$20 for even the shortest of trips from downtown to Cable beach.
