Spanish phrases

Some common (and good) Mexican food:

Tacos al pastor            Pastor tacos, seasoned pork. Good and reliable.
Alambre                      Like fajitas, meat cooked with onions and peppers
Gringa                         A flour tortilla folded flat with cheese and meat
Enchiladas                   Rolled-up tortillas, chicken (usually), cheese, lettuce, green sauce
Chilaquiles                  Nachos with cheese in green sauce
Huarache                     A big, thick, flat tortilla with beans, cheese, sauce, and anything
Pozole                         Red soup, chicken (usually), big corn, vegetables (really good)
Mole                            A sauce of many ingredients, can be red, green, black, and more
Chiles rellenos              Stuffed bell peppers
Chiles en nogada          Perhaps my favorite food in Mexico
Coctel de camarón        Shrimp cocktail
Filete de pescado         Filet of fish, can be prepared many ways
Comidas
A staple of Mexican food is comida, which translates as either food or lunch. Mexicans typically eat their second meal of the day between 2 and 4 p.m. Though the meal is earlier, like dinner north of the border, comida is the largest meal of the day, with several courses, soup, meat, beans, and tortillas.

Restaurants that serve a full Mexican comida are called fondas, or fonditas. They have set menus that include a choice of soup (often vegetable or noodles), rice, beans, tortillas, and then the meal of the day, which could be a piece of meat in sauce, a stuffed pepper, enchiladas, or many other dishes. They include unlimited agua, a watered-down juice made with fresh fruit like strawberry, lime, melon, or tamarindo. The pitcher will be left on your table.
A meal at a fondita typically costs between 20-50 pesos ($1.50 – 4 USD).

Ceviches are like seafood salads and often include shrimp, fish, octopus, or some other seafood. Unlike in Peru, the source of the original ceviche, Mexican ceviches usually contain cooked fish, rather than raw.

Fish is typically served whole with a small salad, rice, French fries, or nachos. Bring your Spanish dictionary to decipher all the options, such as frito (fried), empanizado (breaded), al mojo de ajo (with garlic) or a la diabla (spicy).

pescadillas, which are quesadillas with fish (pescado). They should be cheap and ready to be doused in hot sauce.

 Authentic Mexican Restaurants
Learn how to spot these places. Most taquerias have a trompo (vertical spit) of pastor outside of the restaurants, although many nicer places won’t.
Around 11 a.m., the fonditas begin to open. Look for big concrete rooms with an open kitchen on one side and a hand written menu of daily specials on the wall.
For finer dining, any place that looks crowded with locals is a good bet.

Lighter than juice are aguas: look for jamaica (hibiscus leaves), horchata (sweetened rice drink) or tamarindo

a choice of 3 or 4 main courses served along with soup, tortillas, beans, salsa and a glass of JAMAICA (pronouced HA MY KA) which is like an iced tea made from hibiscus blossoms. Adriana and Ramon also offer breakfast. The hotcakes are incredible!
If you are around on Thursdays, The specialty is a large, breaded fish fillet with rice, beans and salad

Best Restaurants in Playa del Carmen

El Fogon and Don Sirloin
The list would not be complete without a nod to some genuine Mexican taquerias with several branches around town. Some people prefer El Fogon, others Don Sirloin. I think they’re both good. I recommend the tacos al pastor, delicious shavings of spit-roasted pork topped with a slice of pineapple, served on the best corn tortillas.

If you want a delicious, authentic, cheap meal, then the restaurant El Fogon should be at the top of your list because that El Fogon is the best for that type of restaurants which have two locations and the restaurants are almost always filled with locals

Los Aguachiles
If you’re into seafood, Los Aguachiles has you covered. It serves tostadas topped with fresh fish, as well as fried coconut shrimp and even unusual tacos.

El Pirata
If you’re a fan of fresh ceviche for lunch, there’s no better place to go than El Pirata. The place can give you a giant ceviche for just 90-120 pesos. Even with two people, you might struggle to finish it!
Dona Mary
You can’t find a more local place than Dona Mary. This small corner spot is home to simple but delicious chicken tostadas. No English menu, no cutlery available and plastic chairs only, give this place a special vibe. Definitely recommended!
La Cueva del Chango
La Cueva del Chango is a great place for any occasion, due to its amazing setting. Set in a lush garden, this is a great place to have a nice, relaxing, and tropical breakfast. They even have the turtle pond in the middle! My favorite brunch dish there are crepes poblanos with cheese & mushrooms.

Try Yo Amo Tacos. With some of the best tacos in town, a convenient location (at the corner of 5a Avenida and Avenida Constituyentes),
===========================

I decided to put Alux in things to do in Playa del Carmen, as it’s way more than a restaurant. It’s an unusual restaurant in a cave that serves picturesque dishes. They even have the very traditional Mexican escamoles (worm eggs) and chapulines (fried grasshopper). After you eat you can explore the entire space which is huge and full of secret tables.
ALUX   (pronounced a-loosh)

My wife and I always take newbies to Alux . As you mention we just do drinks and a walk about then we go somewhere a bit more fun for dinner (El Fogon, Don Sirloin etc)

Our first visit we planned to have drinks (their signature Alux cocktail is amazing)

We enjoy El Fogon, Don Sirloin and Chianti Deli on more casual fun nights, and even moreso Casa Sofia and Coco’s Cabanas for the pizza and pasta.

If you opt to have a drink and take a tour there is a fee. If you have dinner your waiter will give you a personal tour after.

After dinner, we walked through the entire cave through all the winding pathways.

We ordered the Land and Sea (which feeds two but could easily feed 3 people) and it was beyond amazing!!!
We got two appetizers, two cocktails, a soup and two entrees.  It was $100 USD.
Propina (tip) was included in our bill
not awfully expensive ($80 for two including cocktails, a shared salad and two entrees),
The soup of poblano and huitlacoche was delicious, but so rich you only wanted a few sips. Definitely worth getting, but share it. The appetizers we shared were good too.

BIP BIP | BEST CHEAP MARGARITAS

Located right on 5th avenue and just a few minutes walk from the beach is our go-to place for margaritas in Playa del Carmen. Every time we’ve visited during happy hour and their margaritas are 2 for 1 making them only 35 pesos each ($2). Not only are the cheap but they are pretty darn good. There is no other restaurant on 5th ave or this close to the beach with margaritas for this price. This is our go-to place after a day diving in The Pit Cenote. It’s a great place to hide in the shade and people watch while you cool down with a margarita. We typically opt to have drinks only here and head up Constituyentes to El Fogon for food

CHEZ CELINE | BEST CROISSANTS & DESSERT

You won’t miss Chez Celine when walking down 5th avenue it always has a full patio. It’s most popular for their croissants & desserts. They make some amazing crepes both sweet and savory. We tend to go early in the morning for their breakfast, they have a pretty good breakfast combos ranging from 42-112 pesos. If you aren’t the hungry you can get a croissant and espresso for 42 pesos ($1.50).  After 1 pm there is a salad & sandwich menu.

RH shuttle to PDC

https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g150812-i23-k3856848-Royal_Haciendas_shuttle_service-Playa_del_Carmen_Yucatan_Peninsula.html

First, you need to schedule your rides on the shuttle. Second, the shuttle drops you off several blocks away from WalMart. Personally, I'd take a cab for the grocery shopping trip. It's only 100p. And, I wouldn't shop WalMart -try Mega. ;)

The shuttle drops you off at between 5th and 10th Ave. The Mega and the Walmart are on 30th. The streets go up in 5's so its 6 short blocks to 30th. It is an easy and safe walk to 30th. We catch the shuttle into Playa and taxi back tt the Royal Haciendas with our food. I do like the Mega better than the Walmart, but they are about the same. There are employees at Mega that have vest on that ask if that can help you in english and they look to help tourist find what they are looking for. There are three small steet front restaurants right across from the Mega that have very good local food. Give them a try.

Another vote for Mega. Ditto what flightcontrol said. Take the shuttle into Playa, have dinner, grocery shop, taxi back. Very easy. The shuttle driver will not stop at the grocery stores, but no problema, a quick, safe walk.

There are shuttles to go to Playa del Carmen, but only 3 of times are free of charge; one in the morning and two in the early evening.

free shuttle that leaves at specific times from the Haciendas to Playa del Carmen that drops you off one block north of Constituyentes behind a jewerly store on 5th Ave. It's about 5 blocks to the Mega Mart.

The shuttle to Playa del Carmen is available from The Royal Haciendas during the day until 6:30 p.m. and the last bus back from town is at 6 p.m. There is a small charge per person and you can check the rate, departure times and make a reservation at the Front Desk.  https://www.royalresorts.com/guest-services-and-amenities/free-shuttle-in-cancun/

If you plan on taking the Shuttle, make sure to book this with a concierge or Member Office at least a day before.

hope this hasn't changed.
Schedule:
The Royal Haciendas to Playa del Carmen: 10 AM, 11AM, 12 PM, 1 PM; 4:45 PM & 5:30 PM
Playa del Carmen to The Royal Haciendas: 11:30 AM. 12:30 PM, 1:30 PM, 2:30PM & 6 PM

Schedule to downtown Playa:  10:15, 12, 5:30, 6:30 - Complimentary to downtown
Return to Haciendas:  12:30, 3, 6, 8, 9

Found out that the return shuttle is 40 pesos per person.  So today that is $2.23 us
Taxi is quoted at 160 pesos each way

Taxi rate was $100 Pesos, but i think it has gone up.
It is also walkable to and from PDC from the beach. just a lil over 2 miles to the pier.

Prices at the On-site store is reasonable unless you plan on buying alot, then go to Mega or Wal-Mart. for Alcohol, best to grab some on the way out of the airport from the Duty Free Shop.

as far as restaurant costs: breakfast buffet is $15
Dinner varies: they have theme nites. $25 to $40 (thursday not so prime-rib steak night)
Shrimp Tacos - about $141Pesos - it tasted good though.
Burgers - from $100pesos
Happy Hour cocktails is around $5bux.

The last 2 shuttle times to Playa were at 5:30 and 6:30. Make sure you make reservations early in the day. I don't think you have to make it the day before. Taxi to playa was 110 pesos, they always 120 pesos back, not really a difference.

Dan Deller Sign up for the free shuttle (taxi) into Playa del Carmen, then take the shuttle (taxi) back from the drop-off point for just $40 Pesos ($3US) per person. There's one returning at 8:00 and 9:00. The drop-off/pickup point is behind the jewelry store on 5th Ave just north of Constitution Av. You just have to walk thru jewelry store to get from/to the parking lot from 5th Ave.

Mike LeGay In our opinion, one of the benefits of RH is having many options to dine and shop in Playa. Shuttle in, and cab back. Cab never more than $10. Easily justifiable if you have 4 people. However, we do agree on the limited restaurants at RH.

Gail Milgrim Hallenberg We love all the options on and around Fifth Avenue! We take the shuttle in every night and then a cab back to the resort.

PDC taxi fares in town

http://mexicorelax.com/blog/ground-transportation-playa-del-carmen/

  • Downtown Playa del Carmen: Almost any street or avenue in the Downtown area will have frequent taxis driving by during the day. If you find yourself waiting for more than 5 minutes, make your way to the nearest busy road, like 10th Avenue, 30th Avenue, Benito Juarez or the highway.

RH bicycles

12 new cruiser bikes at Haciendas...Nice ride.....Men's and Women's
No automatic alt text available.

Diane DeBois Clugston You can also take the bikes from the RH into Playa. They r available after 10am till 5 pm on a first come first serve bases & they r FREE!! ( no one to tip either! Lol ) . It's a 15 minute ride to downtown & very safe. They come with locks so you can walk on 5th avenue while they r parked. We actually took them to the Mega grocery store.

Fifth Ave. goes almost to the Haciendas and if you are not in a hurry you can walk it. Takes about 1 hour. But the bikes are a great option. Very easy ride into town and with the bike locks, a safe way to travel during the day.

Amy Kilbey Johnson You can easily take the bus. Walk out the south gates of Grand Coral and go straight down the street to 15th Avenue. City bus picks up on the corner. Dirt cheap and they're easily navigated.

Carol Stabenow Seger Is the point where u can pick up city bus close walking distance to the Royal Haciendas?

Amy Kilbey Johnson It's about a 10 minute walk at most. It's takes you downtown by the Mega and Walmart where you can change to other buses.Teresa Zanetti Free shuttle to Playa from RH Need to reserve space. $4 return for shuttle Set schedule.Nicole Dindo I've been riding the PLAYA EXPRESS for 25 pesos up to PM and it goes into playa as well. It's a 10/15 min walk to the road but well worth it. The taxi is 400 pesos to PM grrrr. It is cheaper into Playa but it still adds up. Yes RH has the free shuttle in to playa but I like to be more flexible with timing.
Carrie Jarvis Kossler Where does the Playa Express drop off on Puerto Moreles?

Nicole Dindo Carrie Jarvis Kossler right at the bus station and then it's a taxi ride for 25 pesos or 1.2 mile walk in to the beach. I took the city bus back to the line for 5 pesos from the main square.

PDC cenote restaurant

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g150812-d2500035-Reviews-Aldea_Corazon-Playa_del_Carmen_Yucatan_Peninsula.html

very cool setting back in a kind of grotto between the buildings and it's own small cenote. Service was very good and attentive. Nice and quiet compared to the main scene on the street. Be aware it will get quite dark in the evening

Had a very delicious breakfast and coffee while sitting out back next to their small cenote that the restaurant was built upon!

pleasantly surprised by this place. It looked quite small when we walked in, but we walked through to the outside seating and I'm glad we did, as it took us through to a beautiful green cenote. We ordered yoghurt with fruit, and Mexican eggs. The portions were huge and the food was great. The juices were also delicious. A great stop for breakfast.

We fell in love with this restaurant, located on the 5th Avenue. The unique setting is what drove us in. Sitting among the tropical trees, a natural smallwaterfall and built around a cenote was truly unique

They bring out a free starter of tortilla chips and 4 dips which they explain to you (so no chance of accidentally blowing your head off with a spicy one!). I had the chicken fajitas which were really authentic

The seating in the front part of the restaurant is rather plain and a bit noisy, behind it is a delightful garden and a small cenoté. The sound of the flowing water is soothing.

Our lunch was good. We enjoyed the Salad Corazón of mixed lettuces, walnut chopped, dried cranberries, goat cheese and a tasty honey vinaigrette. The lettuce was good but could have been more crisp. We also enjoyed fish tacos garnished with cilantro, roasted onions, and salsa Mexicana. The tacos were also quite good.

The small frontage was deceiving, as the restaurant was rather large, with seating through the restaurant/bar area in the back. Seating here was open air, under trees and umbrellas, surrounding gardens and a cenote. There is actually a walkway down to the small cenote.

For dessert, the restaurant celebrated our new marriage with a delicious flan. The dessert was definitely the highlight here!

The dinner prices were very fair, about $50 for two us.
They gave us free dessert, a flan which was amazing and big!
Did I mention the atmosphere outdoors? A cenote, filled with beautiful trees, torches, and a waterfall-wow!

https://www.yelp.com/biz/aldea-coraz%C3%B3n-quintana-roo-2

Now the best part along with the scenery and guacamole is the mango margaritas.

Sit in the back - Proper jungle vibes! juevos rancheros on point. Service is always fantastic & the setting cannot be beat. You'll find the food to be a tad pricier but it's  consistently delicious.

They even had a little walking area in the back and it lead to a ceynote

Nice place as the restaurant is located in a cenote and you are surrounded by threes.
However the food wasn't good and way too expensive for the quality of the food

http://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/restaurant-aldea-corazon/
aldea corazon mexican restaurant

The restaurant’s specialty is Mexican food. If you want a taco joint, this is not what you are looking for. Main courses on the dinner menu range from 15-25$, but the quality of the food for the price is excellent. They are also open for breakfast, brunch and lunch, so you can go at any time of day.
