El Fogon and Don Sirloin
The list would not be complete without a nod to some genuine Mexican taquerias with several branches around town. Some people prefer El Fogon, others Don Sirloin. I think they’re both good. I recommend the tacos al pastor, delicious shavings of spit-roasted pork topped with a slice of pineapple, served on the best corn tortillas.
If you want a delicious, authentic, cheap meal, then the restaurant El Fogon should be at the top of your list because that El Fogon is the best for that type of restaurants which have two locations and the restaurants are almost always filled with locals

Los Aguachiles
If you’re into seafood, Los Aguachiles has you covered. It serves tostadas topped with fresh fish, as well as fried coconut shrimp and even unusual tacos.
El Pirata
If you’re a fan of fresh ceviche for lunch, there’s no better place to go than El Pirata. The place can give you a giant ceviche for just 90-120 pesos. Even with two people, you might struggle to finish it!
Dona Mary
You can’t find a more local place than Dona Mary. This small corner spot is home to simple but delicious chicken tostadas. No English menu, no cutlery available and plastic chairs only, give this place a special vibe. Definitely recommended!
La Cueva del Chango
La Cueva del Chango is a great place for any occasion, due to its amazing setting. Set in a lush garden, this is a great place to have a nice, relaxing, and tropical breakfast. They even have the turtle pond in the middle! My favorite brunch dish there are crepes poblanos with cheese & mushrooms.

I decided to put Alux in things to do in Playa del Carmen, as it’s way more than a restaurant. It’s an unusual restaurant in a cave that serves picturesque dishes. They even have the very traditional Mexican escamoles (worm eggs) and chapulines (fried grasshopper). After you eat you can explore the entire space which is huge and full of secret tables.
ALUX (pronounced a-loosh)
My wife and I always take newbies to Alux . As you mention we just do drinks and a walk about then we go somewhere a bit more fun for dinner (El Fogon, Don Sirloin etc)
Our first visit we planned to have drinks (their signature Alux cocktail is amazing)
We enjoy El Fogon, Don Sirloin and Chianti Deli on more casual fun nights, and even moreso Casa Sofia and Coco’s Cabanas for the pizza and pasta.
If you opt to have a drink and take a tour there is a fee. If you have dinner your waiter will give you a personal tour after.
After dinner, we walked through the entire cave through all the winding pathways.
We ordered the Land and Sea (which feeds two but could easily feed 3 people) and it was beyond amazing!!!
We got two appetizers, two cocktails, a soup and two entrees. It was $100 USD.

not awfully expensive ($80 for two including cocktails, a shared salad and two entrees),
The soup of poblano and huitlacoche was delicious, but so rich you only wanted a few sips. Definitely worth getting, but share it. The appetizers we shared were good too.

BIP BIP | BEST CHEAP MARGARITAS
Located right on 5th avenue and just a few minutes walk from the beach is our go-to place for margaritas in Playa del Carmen. Every time we’ve visited during happy hour and their margaritas are 2 for 1 making them only 35 pesos each ($2). Not only are the cheap but they are pretty darn good. There is no other restaurant on 5th ave or this close to the beach with margaritas for this price. This is our go-to place after a day diving in The Pit Cenote. It’s a great place to hide in the shade and people watch while you cool down with a margarita. We typically opt to have drinks only here and head up Constituyentes to El Fogon for food
CHEZ CELINE | BEST CROISSANTS & DESSERT
You won’t miss Chez Celine when walking down 5th avenue it always has a full patio. It’s most popular for their croissants & desserts. They make some amazing crepes both sweet and savory. We tend to go early in the morning for their breakfast, they have a pretty good breakfast combos ranging from 42-112 pesos. If you aren’t the hungry you can get a croissant and espresso for 42 pesos ($1.50). After 1 pm there is a salad & sandwich menu.
