The Main Show: All of the various shows grew out of the original Tucson Gem & Mineral Show (TGMS), also known as the "Main Show", that is held at the Tucson Convention Center by the Tucson Gem & Mineral Society. It is not called the main show for nothing - it is BIG. All of the dealers hold their best specimens to display at the main show. As with any show, there are display cases, lectures, wholesale and retail dealers. But at the TGMS everything is bigger and better than any other show. The best museums will present display cases that relate to the theme of the year's show or may display their best new acquisitions. The competition display cases are the best in the USA. The mineral dealers are among the best in the world. In addition to the show, there is simultaneously a mineral symposium of lectures usually focused on a particular subject or region in the world. The lectures that are part of the mineral symposium are given by mineral experts from around the world.
The bottom line is: the TGMS is what makes visiting Tucson worth a trip from around the world. It is a must for the first time visitor and any travel itinerary should plan around the TGMS.

TGMS - Quite simply the best mineral show in the world. A few days at this show visiting with dealers, attending lectures, looking at the display cases is truly worth the trip to Tucson alone.
Clarion+Howard Johnsons - This show has many dealers from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, as well as from Brazil. The focus is on gem crystals like aquamarine beryl, heliodor, topaz, etc. Dealers here are truly wholesale suppliers. Many of the retail dealers get their minerals at this show. Parking is impossible and you may have to pay $5 to park in a fee lot.

New Gem exhibit downtown
A new gem exhibit hall for the 22nd Street Mineral, Gossil and Gem Show is being built near downtown at 22nd Street and Interstate 10. The 150,000 square foot, three story, hall should be open for the upcoming Tucson Gem Shows. The 22nd Street Show is among the largest event held. Eons Expo LLP plans to spend $12 million to construct the gem exhibit hall.
You could start by searching the Tucson Convention and Visitors Bureau website. They have a handy form on there to search all of the individual shows for various things (ie: Beads, carvings, classes, jewelry, etc).
Wilkinson recommends the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society’s show from Feb. 9-12 if you’re new to the world of minerals. The dealers there have been vetted to ensure their legitimacy.
This is also the largest of all the local shows and often features particularly beautiful and expensive specimens.

The most renowned gem show is in Tucson, Ariz., between January 30 and February 14. In fact, it’s not one show—it’s a collection of approximately 40 different shows. There are large shows in huge tent showrooms, hotel ballrooms, individual rooms and suites, vendor warehouses, and even corner gas stations! Some shows, known as “Jump Start Shows,” may start a few days earlier. In short, the town of Tucson becomes one big gem show in February.
Because sometimes it’s hard to distinguish if a dealer is marking their products at retail or wholesale price, I make it a habit to ask.
The most professional way to inquire is to ask if the prices are “keystone” or “net.” “Keystone” means the products are marked retail and your cost would be at 50-percent discount. “Net” means “priced as marked.” “Specimens with stickers are keystone, but if they are bagged with a price on the bag, the price is net.
