Venice--Fondaco dei Tedeschi dept store

A 16th-century trading hall overlooking the Rialto Bridge, with period details, art exhibits, and a rooftop terrace offering peerless views of the Grand Canal. A new attraction in Venice? Yes, but not in the way you’d think. This isn’t a new museum or gallery for La Serenissima; it’s a department store. But T Fondaco dei Tedeschi, which opened last October, is a department store like no other.

it is expected to be a major tourist destination. The Fondaco is being rechristened T Fondaco dei Tedeschi and turned into a 72,355-square-foot luxury emporium for the Hong Kong-based DFS Group.
Yes, the duty-free retailer.
The lifestyle department store, as it is being billed, will offer a mix of Italian and international brands, including Fendi, Valentino, Jimmy Choo, Burberry, Tiffany and Bulgari, just as DFS does in its airport shops. But the similarities between this operation and what travelers see at J.F.K. or Abu Dhabi International will end there.

There are two dining options in Fondaco: a gorgeous little cafĂ© and pastry shop, and a lunch and dinner dining area in the middle of the ground floor. The menus focus on fresh, local raw fish, vegetables, and meats, as well as Alajmo’s interpretation of pizza, all of which is meant to be shared.
