Rome-Palatine Hill

Augustus, Cicero, and Marc Antony (Marcus Antonius) all had homes on the hill. Later, emperors built their domains here and, at one point, the entire hill was covered with imperial palaces. The hill became synonymous with palaces; in fact in many languages, including English, the word 'palace' is derived from 'palatine'.

During the Middle Ages, churches and convents were built on Palatine Hill. Later, almost the entire hill was owned by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, who created an ornate botanical garden on top of the ruins

Sandwiched between the Roman Forum and the Circo Massimo, the Palatino (Palatine Hill) is an atmospheric area of towering pine trees, majestic ruins and memorable views. It was here that Romulus supposedly founded the city in 753 BC and Rome's emperors lived in unabashed luxury. Look out for the stadio (stadium), the ruins of the Domus Flavia (imperial palace), and grandstand views over the Roman Forum from the Orti Farnesiani.

The birthplace of palaces is the Palatine Hill above the Roman Forum in Rome, Italy

Today it's an overgrown, tree-shaded hilltop of pretty gardens and fragments of ancient villas (only a handful of which are open to the public) that few visitors bother to climb.The Palatine Hill was where Rome began as a tiny Latin village (supposedly founded by Romulus) in the 8th century BC. Later it was covered with the palaces of patrician families and the early emperors.
