Grand Lake is a short drive with many eating opportunities.Winter Park is in the other direction with shopping and other activities.
Rocky Mountain National Park was 15 miles away--awesome park--longer drive than expected.

The local City Market seemed well stocked and prices normally jacked up in resort towns actually was cheaper than at our home in the San Diego area.
Generally less crowded than Grand Lake, Granby offers easy access to the western side of Rocky Mountain National Park. Lake Granby is one of Colorado's largest, and is popular with trout and salmon anglers.
Granby, in the Middle Park area of Colorado, falls between two well-known communities — Winter Park, with its ski area, and Grand Lake, at the western entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park in Grand County.
The next day the whole family can take a ride and see some elk or maybe even a moose. Perhaps take a day trip through Rocky Mountain National Park and over Trail Ridge Road, with its majestic views of the Never Summer Mountain Range, on the highest continuous paved road in the world.

Between Granby and Hot Sulphur Spings on Highway 40 are Many Fishing Opportunities
Willow Creek - Connects Willow Creek Reservoir to the Colorado River. You can only use artificial flies and lures. All Native Cutthroat Trout are catch and release (you must return them to the water immediately). There are points along County Road 40 giving you access to the Creek.
Colorado River - The stretch of the river between Hot Sulphur Springs and where it intersects with Highway 34 near Granby is Gold Medal Waters. It follows Highway 40 and you can access it at various points along the way.
Trail Ridge Road is another unique aspect of RMNP. This road is the highest continuous paved road in the world, climbing past the tree line and traveling past Colorado tundra. The road travels 48 miles from Estes Park to Grand Lake, and is generally open from late May through mid-October.

Strawberry Fishing Access
Strawberry Area provides one of the few public access points along the Fraser River, which is predominately bordered by private land. The Fraser River Access Trail allows access to approximately .75 miles of the Fraser River, which is a popular fishing area in Grand County. Rainbow trout, German brown trout, and brook trout can all be found in the river.
Colorado River -- The Colorado River spends it's first 50+ miles in Grand County. The best trout are downstream from Granby. Along the Colorado, there are many private and public fishing spots. Access is easy as Hwy 40 parallels the river. Public fishing is good
- From Hot Sulphur Springs downstream 4 miles to the end of Lonebuck Campground.
- From Parshall downstream 3 miles to the end of BLM Sunset property.
These spots are 50 to 70 minutes from the Winter Park Base Village. You can look forward to catching some of the best rainbows and browns in the state. Summer is dry fly time. Fall is for streamers and nymphs when the browns are spawning.

Fraser River -- The Fraser River begins at the Continental Divide at Berthoud Pass and flows north through the towns of Winter Park and Fraser then eventually joins the Colorado River outside Granby. Many small mountain streams join the Fraser before it goes into a narrow canyon just outside Tabernash. Once in the canyon, the river is classified as Wild Trout Water with a 2 fish limit. Catch and release is even better. The canyon has many rainbows, browns, brookies and an occasional cutthroat. This is serious fly fishing at it's best. Access is by walking down the railroad right of way. Be mindful of private property. This area is not suitable for families, picnics, nor dogs.

St Louis Creek -- This creek begins at St Louis Lake high above timberline [see discussion of the lake below]. St Louis Creek joins the Fraser River in the town of Fraser. Turn off US 40 west onto Eisenhower Drive in the town of Fraser. Follow the road 2 miles to the Fraser Experimental Forest. From here you may fish the next 8 miles of stream with no special regulations. The creek is home to brook trout with some rainbows and browns. Total driving time from the Winter Park Base and the Zephyr Mountain Lodge Condo is 20 to 40 minutes.

Willow Creek -- This waterway runs from the northern reaches of Grand County into the Colorado River just below Granby. Willow Creek is some of the most beautiful and least visited stream fishing in all Colorado. Best of all, the area is easily accessed by car and 14 miles of river are open to the public. Drive 2 miles west of Granby on US34. Take CO 125 north and follow the highway until you enter the Arapaho National Forest. Public fishing begins here with the road paralleling the stream. Willow Creek hosts a good population of brookies and rainbows with a few browns. There are no special regulations. Total driving time from the winter park base and Zephyr Mountain Lodge Condo is 45 to 60 minutes.
Willow Creek Reservoir -- About 40 miles on paved and dirt roads. Get directions using good forest service map. Good fishing for pan-sized rainbows. Wake-less speed for boats.
Monarch Lake
A very pretty quiet lake with no motors allowed on boats. Rainbows, browns and brookies can be caught with no special regulations.
HOW TO KNOCK OUT THE COLORADO BROWN TROUT LOOP
From downtown Denver take 6th Avenue West to the junction with I-70. Go west until you hit the small town of Idaho Springs. Clear Creek can be fished both up and downstream from Idaho Springs.
From here, get back on I-70 until you get to the Empire Exit. Take this exit toward the town of Empire and continue up and over Berthoud Pass. This CR 40 will take you through Winter Park and Granby. You'll first meet up with the Colorado River Near Windy Gap Reservoir. There are a number of public fishing access points between Windy Gap and the Town of Kremmling.

THE UPPER COLORADO RIVER
The Colorado River is an amazing place to experience all the beauty that Colorado has to offer - including great opportunities to target big brown trout in the fall. The river starts high in Rocky Mountain National Park and is Colorado's largest watershed drainage. From deep canyons to panoramic meadows and majestic peaks, the Colorado River is a great river to explore. The Upper Colorado River traverses from Windy Gap Reservoir, just west of the town of Granby, to the confluence of the Blue River near Kremmling. This section is Gold Metal water and closely follows Highway 40 - making it a fairly easy road trip. Major public access points include Hot Sulphur Springs, Buyers Canyon and the small town of Parshall.

The Colorado River near the small town of Parshall offers native trout any day of the year. This section of river stays moving all year round with the assistance of the Williams Fork River that is directly upstream. Parshall is famous for its large abundance of winter midge hatches making it possible to trick fish on the surface on almost any day of the year! The "Parshall Hole" undoubtedly holds the largest amount of fish in the winter months. It is located directly upstream of the highway 40 public parking area. This 100-yard long, deep section of river holds hundreds of fish in the winter months. Deep nymphing with midge patterns or taking advantage of a mid-day hatch with a size 20 midge or Parachute Adams is the best plan of attack for this hole. Further downstream you will also find other deep holding water that can produce record rainbows even in the dead of winter!
And, after a long day of fishing, you can always count on one of our favorite watering holes, the nearby "Parshall Inn", to provide a cozy, retro setting for you to enjoy a cold one.
