This was our plan, and it worked very well:
Get to Avis about 8, get the car and their map. (also get Murray's guide in advance.)
Drive out to the Gold Rush cemetary for a look around.
Then take the Dyea turnoff as far as the overlook for a great view.
Back to the main road, over the pass, leisurely drive through the Yukon stopping often for pictures.
Pass Caribou Crossing to the World's Smallest Desert and Emerald Lake.
We stopped for lunch at Spirit Lake, just past CC, but you can also have lunch at CC. We basically spent about four hours making the trip out. We had prebooked for the dog cart ride, AIRC about 1:30 PM which is after the tour buses leave.
After the cart ride some of us did the ATVs and others toured the museum.
Then we drove straight back to Skagway which takes about an hour and a half without stopping, and had about an hour to shop!
